Mosinee Middle School students took a break from classwork and focused on their health during a program, called Wellness Day, designed to emphasize healthy lifestyles.

Sixth- through eighth-grade students, about 500 in all, participated in activities that stimulated their minds and bodies. Kids were either at the school or scattered across the city, depending on where each of the program?s 16 activities were located.

Wellness Day, held this year on Friday, originally was called Hobby Day, and was created by health teacher Deb Christman to prevent drug and alcohol use among students.

?We?re taking some students to the ski hill who have never skied before,? Christman said. ?It?s all about staying active and trying new things.?

Students also participated in such activities as yoga, archery and cooking.

Eighth-grader Breanna Ekum spent part of her day making guacamole and berry green tea smoothies. She chose that activity because she likes cooking at home with her mother.
